ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the prevalence
of urinary tract infections among Primary school children in Ikere Local Government
Area of Ekiti State. A total number of two hundred
pupils were randomly sampled, one hundred males and one hundred females. The
instrument used for data collection was a self developed questionnaire given to
the respondents. The researcher employed descriptive survey research design,
the data was analyzed with the use of frequency counts and percentages. Based on the results of the study, it was
discovered that urinary tract infection is prevalent among primary school
pupils in Ikere local government Area of Ekiti State.
The result further revealed that urinary tract infections is more prevalent in
female pupils than male but a particular type of the disease known as
shictosomiasis is mostly found in male children at ages ten to twelve in
primary five to six. The study further revealed that poor personal hygiene,
lack of adequate fluid intake, swimming in infected rivers are very common. On the basis of the findings
it was recommended that there should be regular laboratory test of pupils urine
specimen. Health education unit of the Primary school health programme must
intensify its campaign on good personal hygiene, provision of good toilet
facilities at home and in the schools,
regular fluid intake among pupils and
discouraging them from swimming in rivers..
